Oscar winner Denzel Washington will make a return to series television – but this time he will be behind-the-camera.

The actor, who got his start on the NBC series "St. Elsewhere" in the 1980s, is considering an executive producer gig on "Billy Stiles," a cop drama from TV writer Virgil Williams. Fox is in talks to pick up the project, according to the Hollywood Reporter.      

The ensemble drama centers on the title character, a genius gang member-turned-cop. It's based on a short story Williams wrote six years ago when he was between staff writing jobs.      

"Billy Stiles" originally was developed as a cable series but later was reworked as a network show and taken to Fox, with Washington on board for the pitch.
